No state licence exists for this trade. Here is what does.
A lot of garage door advertising in this metro implies a licence that does not exist. Knowing what Kansas actually regulates — and what it does not — is the difference between a useful question and a meaningless one.
The state level: nothing
Kansas has no statewide general contractor licence and no garage door licence of any kind. Any company describing itself as "state licensed" for garage door work is describing something that does not exist. What the state does license is unrelated to this trade: electrical, mechanical and plumbing masters hold state-recognised credentials. A garage door is none of those.
This is not unusual — many states leave this trade to local regulation — but it does mean the question "are you licensed?" produces an answer that cannot be verified, which is why it is the wrong question to lead with.
Kansas City, Kansas and Wyandotte County
The Unified Government of Wyandotte County requires a business licence, or occupational tax registration, to conduct business in Kansas City, Kansas. This is business registration rather than trade competence — it establishes that a company is registered to trade, not that it knows what a winding bar is.
The Unified Government's Building Inspection trade licensing covers master licences for the electrical, mechanical and plumbing trades specifically. Garage door work is not among them.

Johnson County
Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa, Shawnee, Prairie Village, Leawood, Merriam, Mission and De Soto share the Johnson County Contractor Licensing programme. It grades contractors by class:
- Class A — general contracting, the broadest category
- Class B — building contracting
- Class C — residential contracting
- Plus trade-specific classes for particular disciplines
Licensing requires passing an ICC examination and carrying insurance. There is no garage-door-specific class in the programme, which again tells you this trade is not separately credentialed here.

Permits: when they apply
| Work | Permit? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Spring, cable, roller, hinge replacement | No | Maintenance |
| Opener repair or replacement | No | Equipment, not building work |
| Sensors, seals, panels | No | Maintenance |
| New door, same opening | None published | Like-for-like replacement |
| Widening or altering the opening | Yes | Structural; header and framing |
| New garage construction | Yes | Building work |
If a job involves the opening itself rather than what hangs in it, that is building work and the city needs to be involved. A contractor who shrugs at that question is one to avoid.
What to ask instead
- "Can I see your certificate of insurance?" General liability and workers' compensation. This is the question that matters, because without it an injury in your garage becomes your problem. Ask to see it, not just to be told it exists.
- "Are you registered with the city or county I'm in?" Business registration in Kansas City, Johnson County contractor licensing across the line.
- "Will I get the price before you start?" In writing, itemised, parts and labour separate.
- "What's the cycle rating on the springs you're fitting?" A real answer tells you they know what they are putting on. A vague one tells you something too.
- "Are you pulling a permit?" Only relevant if the opening is changing — but the answer reveals whether they know the rule.
Two things to walk away from
A claimed Kansas garage door licence. It does not exist. A company inventing one is either careless about what it says or counting on you not checking.
An offer to cover your insurance deductible after a hail event. It is fraud, it makes you a participant, and the outfits offering it across Wyandotte and Johnson counties after a storm are rarely findable a year later.
Common questions
So nobody is licensed for this work in Kansas?
Not as a garage door trade, no — the state licenses no such thing and neither Wyandotte County nor Johnson County has a garage-door class. What exists is business registration in Kansas City and the Class A, B and C contractor licensing in Johnson County, neither of which is specific to this work. Insurance is the meaningful credential.
What should I actually check before booking?
The certificate of insurance, looked at rather than described. After that: registration with your city or county, a written itemised price before work starts, and a straight answer about the cycle rating of any springs being fitted. Those four tell you most of what you need to know.
Do I need a permit to replace my garage door?
Not for a like-for-like swap into the existing opening — no requirement is published by the Unified Government or the Johnson County cities for that. Changing the size of the opening, moving the header or altering framing is structural work and does need one. Ring Unified Government Planning on 913-573-8620 or Overland Park Permit Services on 913-895-6220 to confirm for your address.
Someone told me they are 'certified'. Does that mean anything?
It might mean a manufacturer training course, which is a real thing but is not a licence and is not regulated by anyone. It is worth asking certified by whom and in what. The answer is sometimes genuinely useful and sometimes turns out to be a certificate the company issued itself.
Who do I complain to if work goes wrong?
For a Johnson County city, the Contractor Licensing office at 111 S Cherry Street in Olathe or contractor.licensing@jocogov.org. In Kansas City, Kansas the Unified Government License Department on 913-573-8780. The Kansas Attorney General's consumer protection division takes consumer complaints more generally. Keep your written estimate and invoice — they are what any of those offices will ask for first.
